Selian Lutheran Hospital, A Turnaround Story

Selian Lutheran Hospital serves a large population near Arusha, Tanzania, in an area where many are too poor to pay for services. The resulting financial pressure was impacting availability and quality of services, their ability to attract paying patients, staff compensation and morale. The situation at Selian was not unlike the experience of many of Global Health Ministries’ partner hospitals. Dr. Amon, Director of the hospital, and staff have led a remarkable turnaround, working with GHM and others to improve the hospital’s financial situation, reduce debt and become more financially stable, with a vision that leads to lasting change.

What makes Selian special? When GHM’s Executive Director, Rev. Doug Cox, visited Selian in September, 2023, he had the opportunity to hear directly from staff their answer to that question, and their perspective on the power of capacity-building partnerships for a more sustainable future.
