I joined a feasibility study and needs assessment project in Tanzania. I was genuinely surprised about how much I could contribute … I was thrilled to support an organization that’s in it for the long haul. My participation both complicated and broadened my worldview and the principles of our project will be a part of my career going forward.

Strengthening Sustainability

WHO and UN Sustainable Development Goals, highlighting Good Health and Well-Being

The clock is ticking …

We are in the second half of the 2015-2030 time frame set by all countries on earth to achieve “Health for All,” one of the 17 United Nations sustainable development goals (SDGs). The SDGs, or The Global Agenda, is “a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet” (UN). It is a global call to action of partnership for a healthier world.

Aligned with the SDGs,* GHM Consulting works at the invitation of our partner countries to help them improve good health and well-being.

SDG #3 “Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All Ages.” Health for All is a primary focus for GHM Consulting, focused on strengthening governance, leadership and financing, with emphasis on community-engaged care for sustainable health development.

SDG #17 Partnerships for the Goals. GHM Consulting embraces an integrated, iterative and wholistic approach that inherently involves partnering in collaboration with other like-mission, like-value organizations to leverage a variety of disciplines and resources in support of GHM’s country partners.

We view long-term partner relationships as our core competency.

Together with our partners, we look beyond their facilities at how to most effectively reduce the disease burden and meet the health needs of their communities. Using shared values and evidence-informed social change methods, we help our partners focus on influencers of health, particularly through community-based primary healthcare, including development and sustainability of community health worker (CHW) programs. Consistent with other SDG goals, e.g., #1 Poverty, #2 Hunger, #4 Education, #5 Equity, #6 Water, etc., maternal and child health, disease prevention, sanitation, food security, clean drinking water, and nutrition are frequent emphases in these community-based health improvement initiatives.

“From my career of healthcare leadership and consulting in the U.S., I thought I knew something. But as I waded into a calling to improve global health, I quickly realized that I did not know what I did not know. My call to serve the neediest in the world has challenged me to raise my partnering, population health and talent development capabilities to new levels. I was not sure how to be effective across cultures, languages, large time zone and geography differences, religions, and resources. But by trying to listen to our partners and global colleagues with a servant leader heart, I have learned – and continue to learn – how to add value and help make a positive difference as part of the GHM team.”
